The Carbon Trust Standard methodology is based on existing international carbon measurement standards and extensive research with businesses, public sector organisations and stakeholders.
The Standard is subject to annual review and takes into account feedback from applicants, certified organisations, our assessors, external stakeholders and others.
An external Advisory Board provides independent advice on technical issues and informs the development of the Standard.
Advisory Board objectives and remit
The objective of the Carbon Trust Standard Advisory Board is to provide independent, objective guidance to the Carbon Trust Standard Methodology Steering Group on the further development of the Standard in line with the Carbon Trust’s mission.
The Advisory Board will provide technical guidance on the definition of the Standard’s rules and methodology, including: - The carbon footprint measurement requirements.
- The carbon footprint reduction requirements.
- The carbon management requirements.
- The alignment of the Carbon Trust Standard with other standards / schemes.
- The resolution of technical issues that arise.
- The identification of key areas for future consideration.

Changes to the Carbon Trust Standard methodology
The Carbon Trust Standard is currently operating using version 1.2 of the methodology, dated September 2009, available from our document library.
